Projects
- Book: The Not-So-Special Interests
Entitled "The Not-So-Special
Interests: Public Representation via Advocacy Organizations," the book explores who gets represented and whose voice gets heard in American national politics.
The manuscript explains how advocacy organizations become involved in national policymaking and public debate and how large constituencies, such as ethnic, religious,
and socioeconomic groups, come to be represented by lobbying organizations in Washington.
- Michigan Policy Network
We are creating a network of websites on state policy issues with regular reporting and background
research conducted by undergraduates. We plan to launch the site in November 2008. Check our proposal for additional information.
- Book: The Dynamic American Campaign
With three co-authors, I am writing a book on contemporary campaign strategy and public response to campaigns.
- Win The Right
Way
I have written and helped edit a book on campaign strategy for local
politicians. The book includes advice from professional consultants along
with information on all major aspects of local campaigns, including the logistics,
ethics, and strategy of running for office. It is available online and
in print from the Berkeley Public Policy Press. I compiled research from public opinion polls, focus groups,
and consultant interviews for use in the book. The project is funded by the
Pew Charitable Trusts.
- Bipartisan
California Commission on Internet Political Practices
I authored the signature report,
organized hearings, and planned the research agenda for a blue-ribbon panel
commissioned by the California state legislature to investigate regulation
of online political activity. I also testified before the Fair Political Practices
Commission, briefed Members of the California State Legislature, and held
a press
conference to present the report. Our research included a 50-state survey
of regulatory agencies and an index of the potential regulatory implications
of all online political activity.
